Merck & Co. pulled the plug on the drug Vioxx a few years ago when they found out about the health issues surrounding it.

This resulted in them paying out $5 billion to settle around 50,000 pending lawsuits.

Researchers have confirmed what many feared, as the long-term study proved that Vioxx does double the risk of heart attack or stroke.

They also found though that after being off of the drug for a year, those risks disappear.

All drugs in thsi class, Cox-2 inhibitors, may pose the same health risks.

The new study has been published in the British medical journal the Lancet.
