Researchers led by Dr. Matthew Meyerson and colleagues from the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and other international researchers carried out a broad gene analysis.

The idea behind the analysis was to see which gene mutations were linked with cancers and other diseases.

For the study, they decoded 623 genes from the tumors of 188 lung cancer patients.

They were able to discover 26 new gene mutations linked with the most common form of lung cancer, lung adenocarcinoma.

These same mutations were also linked to many other types of cancer as well.

This doubles the previously known number of genes linked to lung cancer.
