Statins are the best-selling drug in the world, and are effective in lowering cholesterol, cutting the risk of heart attack, stroke and more.

For the study, researchers were led by Dr. Reimar Thomsen of Aarhus University and Aalborg Hospital in Denmark and followed a total of 29,900 patients who were treated for pneumonia.

Those who took statins were able to see their risk of death from pneumonia reduced by 31%.

In a separate study, researchers from the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Pennsylvania carried out a similar study.

They found that statins reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis, or leg blood clots.

The first study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The second study was revealed at the meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.
