Vitamins C and E Do Not Cut Down Cancer Risk?

November 17, 2008

Vitamin Pills are inaffective in preventing cancer risks(Chattahbox) – Scientists have shot down the popular theory that vitamins C and E, help in reducing cancer risks. They stated that the vitamins are completely ineffective if taken in the pill form. Two scientists proved after testing for 10 years on thousands of doctors that the popular vitamins do not cut down cancer risks if taken in the pill form. They also reported that the two vitamins also did not help in protecting users from heart diseases.

“At least in the context of two very common outcomes — cardioprotection and chemoprevention — we see no compelling evidence to take vitamin E or C supplements,” said one of the study’s authors, Dr. Howard Sesso, an assistant professor of medicine in the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Sesso will present his studies at a meeting at American Academy of Cancer Research in Washington DC.

They tested nearly 14641 male physicians and found no instances that Vitamin E or C helps to prevent cancer. The doctors were split in to four groups and given regular doses of Vitamin C and E. They were randomly assigned to take 500mg of vitamin C supplement daily and 400 international units of vitamin E every other day or the placebo pills for the 10 years of study. All men were above the age of 50 at the start of the trial.

“This is a very large, long-term clinical trial, and it was determined there was no effect from E or C,” Sesso concluded. “This is preliminary data, but it is pretty consistent with what we’re seeing in other research with individual nutrients. When you take the nutrient out of its natural environment, it may not be protective,” said Jennifer Crum, a nutritionist at the New York University Cancer Institute, who added that in foods, vitamins and other nutrients likely work together to provide protection against cancer.

Such finding are proving to be vital as people are slowly realising that they need to adapt healthier lifestyle and alter their food eating habits rather than opting for pills to fight diseases like cancer or heart diseases.

There are however advanced nutritional compounds such as biotivia transmax resveratrol, an extract of red wine which has been shown in multiple studies at institutions including Harvard Medical School to prevent the diseases of aging and to extend the life span of mammals. The pharmaceutical industry wants us to assume that no nutritional supplements prevent disease and this has clearly been proved to be untrue. In fact, a large number of the most effective drugs are derived from natural sources or are merely synthetic versions of plant-based compounds.

The study was with an entity that makes BIG money by “treating” these diseases. Doctor’s are the most “noncompliant” people, yet they are selected for subject for this “study”?
When are we going understand that paying people to NOT find any solutions is just flushing money down the drain? How much money was wasted on this?
