New Study Shows Virginity Pledges Are Worthless?

December 29, 2008

US (ChattahBox) – According to a new study by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, teens who give virginity pledges are just as likely to have sex as teens who don’t, but are also much less likely to use proper contraceptive methods to prevent STD’s and pregnancy.

Janet E. Rosenbaum, the researcher in charge of the study, used the same data that was once used to claim that virginity pledgers were less likely to have sex, and used a different statistical method to chart findings. The results were very different.

“Virginity pledgers and similar non-pledgers don’t differ in the rates of vaginal, oral or anal sex or any other sexual behavior,” Rosenbaum said. “Strikingly, pledgers are less likely than similar non-pledgers to use condoms and also less likely to use any form of birth control.”

Rather then using the short term results, as the other study did, Rosenbaum took the data collected from 934 students, and re-surveyed them after 5 years. The results showed that there was no difference between the students who had taken the pledge, and those who hadn’t, with the same rates or vaginal, oral, and anal sex amongst then, and yet the pledgers most frequently having unprotected sex.

It also showed that over 80% who had taken the pledge denied ever having done so. “This high rate of disaffiliation may imply that nearly all virginity pledgers view pledges as nonbinding,” Rosenbaum added.

“When pledgers fell off the wagon, they fell off hard,” Bill Albert, chief program officer for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, commented on the study. “What have we gained if we encourage young people only to delay sex until they are older, but when they do become sexually active, they don’t protect themselves or their partners?

“The notion that it has to be either a virginity pledge or encouraging teens to have sex is a false dichotomy. There is a public consensus in this country to encourage teens to delay sex, but also provide them with information about contraception.”

Is anyone with a brain surprised? Sex education is having teenagers promise not to do it? Thank you government for wasting my tax dollars on stupid programs like this. How many millions went to these program? What kind of cash can I get if I promise to be the master of my domain? Can we please just educate children about the dangers of unprotected sex and let parents worry about their morals?
