Over the Counter Cancer Tests: Just Two-Years Away

May 22, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Scientists from the University of Central Florida, have pioneered over the counter home testing kits for cancer and they could be appearing on the shelves of your local pharmacy within two years.

The simple testing kits would be able to detect the presence of seven to 10 different types of cancers, including lung, colon and prostate from a small drop of blood.

Qun Huo, a professor at the University of Central Florida, developed the new tests that he notes are designed to be used as a life saving early screening tool and not as a diagnostic tool. The earlier cancer is detected and treatment is started before the cancer spreads, the higher the survival rates.

Huo developed his groundbreaking cancer tests using tiny gold nanoparticles, ranging from nine nanometers to over 100 nanometers. The gold nanoparticles detect biomarkers in a user’s blood, providing results within minutes.

The gold nanoparticles detect a chemical produced by a cancerous cell, by adhering to and sandwiching the cancer particles. Waves of light then bounce off the larger compounds detecting the existence of the cancer molecules.

Current blood tests that detect cancerous biomarkers are expensive, take time, require large amounts of blood and can only detect large volumes of biomarkers. Huo’s tests overcome all these issues, providing quick results with a single drop of blood, as well as having the capacity to detect a small number of biomarkers.

Early detection of cancerous biomarkers could save lives, and should soon be on store shelves sharing space with pregnancy test kits and glucose monitoring kits.
