Anti-Anxiety Agent Instantly Calms Fears, Minus Side-Effects

June 20, 2009

(ChattahBox)—A team of European scientists has developed a new chemical agent that instantly calms fears and panic attacks, without the troubling side effects associated with other anti-anxiety drugs. Chronic and disabling anxiety may one day be treated on-the-spot without drowsiness or long-term addiction problems.

Head researcher Dr. Rainer Rupprecht of Ludwig Maximilian University and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, together with researchers from various institutes and universities across Germany and Switzerland, performed studies using the naturally occurring molecule.

The binding molecule or ligand called, XBD173 binds with the translocator protein (18 kDa), which instantly sets in motion a feeling of calm, stopping anxiety and panic attacks in their tracks.

The ligand, XBD173 promotes calming effects through the modulation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA, which triggers a natural calming response to anxiety and fear, without a feeling of being drugged.

Rupprecht and his team first administered XBD173 to laboratory rats that that were induced with anxiety and panic attacks. The XBD173 quickly calmed the rats’ anxiety response, without developing tolerance to the drug or troublesome side effects.

Next, Rupprecht’s team administered XBD173 to a group of 70 healthy men, with an additional control group. The group given XBD173 experienced a fast anti-anxiety response of calm, without drowsiness or withdrawal symptoms.

This study indicates the natural binding molecule may provide a faster acting and symptom free treatment for anxiety. Current anti-anxiety drugs, such as benzodiazepines can cause side effects of sedation, tolerance build-up or withdrawal symptoms after chronic use.

There are some issues to consider, before such a drug is approved as a treatment for anxiety. Does the drug induce calm, or is it an anti-fear agent? An anti-fear agent raises implications for self-harmful behavior, such as jumping off a building like Superman, believing there is no danger, or even as a method to create Supersoldiers with no fear.

Once these issues are resolved, XBD173 could be a much-welcomed treatment for sufferers of chronic and often disabling anxiety.

The study is published in the latest issue of Science.
