FDA Panel Recommends Ban on 2 Popular Painkillers and Restrict Tylenol

July 1, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A federal advisory panel voted on Tuesday to recommend a ban on Percocet and Vicodin, two of the most used prescription painkillers on the world market, due to the drugs effects on the liver. They also voted on recommendations for changes in packaging and dosage on all products containing acetaminophen (Tylenol). Acetaminophen is also found in several cold and cough remedy products, and in prescription drugs for example Vicodin and Percocet. Acetaminophen, an aspirin alternative in use for five decades to reduce pain and fever, has been a leading cause of liver injury for more than a decade, the FDA said.

The committee of physicians, pharmacists and researchers who act as advisers to the Food and Drug Administration voted 20-17 today for the ban on Percocet and Vicodin, which also contain a narcotic. They also suggested further precautions ranging from placing warning labels on the products for potential liver damage to a complete withdrawal of the drug from the shelves.

Johnson & Johnson’s Tylenol, the most widely used painkiller in the world, has the advantage of not inducing stomach bleeding or other gastrointestinal side effects, that other popular pain medications, like aspirin and ibuprofen, can cause.  The advisory committee recommended that Tylenol should be given in lower doses decreasing the maximum daily dose to 2,600 milligrams from 4,000 milligrams and than the Extra-Strength version (500 milligrams) should be sold by prescription only. The FDA will likely take the panels recommendations seriously but isn’t bound by what the committee says.
