Obesity Is ‘Growing’ In The US, Says Report

July 1, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – The obesity rate in the United States has once again risen, and concern over the epidemic is growing as children feature more on that chart.  In 31 states, more than one in four adults are obese, says a new report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

According to an official report, obese and overweight children have become more common than ever, with the percentage now tipping over the 30% mark. Likewise, the rate of adults who are above the healthy weight range have risen in 23 of 50 states.

But it is more than a health concern. It is an economic one.

“The obesity epidemic is a big contributor to the skyrocketing health care costs in the US,” Dr. Jeff Levi of the Trust for America’s Health, one of the organizations that led the survey, explained to the BBC.

“How are we going to compete with the rest of the world if our economy and workforce are weighed down by bad health?”

Of all 50 states, Mississippi has the highest number of obesity cases with 32.5% of citizens overweight, and Colorado has the lowest.  Four states now have rates above 30 percent, including Mississippi, West Virginia (31.2 percent), Alabama (31.1 percent) and Tennessee (30.2 percent). Eight of the 10 states with the highest percentage of obese adults are in the South.
