Vegetarian Diets Linked To Protection From Certain Cancers

July 1, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – A new study has found that vegetarians seem to be better protected against certain kinds of cancers.

According to the results of a study performed on 60,000 people from the United Kingdom and New Zealand, people who eat no meat or fish have better protection against certain stomach, bladder, blood, and bone marrow cancers.

However, this protection does not seem to extend to more common cancers, such as breast, colon, or cervical.

Researchers are not sure why those who strictly abstain from meat and fish seem able to avoid certain diseases, though they have speculated that it may be due to a protective quality in the vegetables themselves, as well lessened risk of developing a disease from compromised elements within the meat.

But doctors are not suggesting everyone give up the beef.

“At the moment these findings are not strong enough to ask for particularly large changes in the diets of people following an average balanced diet,” lead researcher Tim Key was quoted by BBC News.

The main benefit of this study seems to be that it gives real evidence that diet may have a direct effect on the development of cancer, which has been blamed on a number of elements.

The study has been published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Friday night Jim and I had the opportunity to attend a charity event thanks to his employer who was a major sponsor of the event. Overnight I went from slinging mac n’ cheese to my kids at home to mingling with the toast of Tampa society at the University of Tampa. The event is a major fundraiser for the group that sponsors the whole shindig, and you’ve never seen so many rich old white people in your LIFE.
