New Laser Treatment May Stop Age-Related Blindness

July 6, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – An opthalmologist at King’s College, London, who is famous for his previous work of developing laser eye surgery as a means of curing short-sightedness, has found a way to stop aging of the eyes, which leads to blindness.

John Marshall has created a way of using laser surgery, done in little pulses, to heal damage cause by age-related macular degeneration without creating further damage to cells.

So far it has only had the ability to slow down the process by a certain degree, but he says that “if you can delay the onset by three, four, six, seven or 10 years, it’s proof of the principle.”

“If you look to the age of 80 we all have a 30% chance probability that we will have some visual loss due to the aging process even if we don’t have the AMD gene,” Marshall was quoted in The Telegraph.

“All of us will ultimately lose vision if we live long enough. That’s why the impact of this rejuvenation is profound.”
