Study Says Plain Old Vinegar Fights Fat, Prevents Weight Gain

July 7, 2009

(ChattahBox)–A new study shows that an ingredient contained in natural vinegar that sits unappreciated in our cupboards waiting to be used in simple salad dressings, may hold the key to fighting body fat and maintaining a slim and youthful appearance.

Simple vinegar has long been used as a natural, inexpensive and readily available health remedy for all sorts of ailments, such as indigestion, skin rashes and sore throats. Its acidic and anti-fungal properties also make plain vinegar a great natural cleaning product for use in kitchens and bathrooms.

Now, a group of scientists from Japan have put the age-old folk remedy through its scientific paces, conducting a laboratory study to test the effectiveness of vinegar on preventing weight gain.

Previous studies have shown the benefits of vinegar to control blood pressure, blood sugar levels and fat accumulation.

A team of researchers in Japan fed laboratory mice a high-fat diet. The group of mice given the main ingredient in vinegar, called acetic acid developed up to 10 percent less body fat than the control group of mice not treated with acetic acid.

The researchers found that the acetic acid fights fat by boosting fat-fighting genes that unleash fatty acid oxidation enzymes. The enzymes rapidly break down fats in the body, leading to a slimmer appearance.

A bottle of apple cider vinegar costs pennies. Does this new study mark the end of expensive weight loss remedies?

I have read about the power of vinegar and we use it for all kinds of things in our home! I have also read about the amazing benefits that probiotics are showing for people! We gave our little boy the Vidazorb kids chewable for his severe Eczema and we have personally seen awesome results with it. We all take it now! I have also read that probiotics are being linked to weight management! Have you heard this too? Thanks, Caroline
