Anti-Obesity Pill Melts Away Fat in Mice at Astounding Rate

July 14, 2009

(ChattahBox)—With numerous health problems associated with obesity on the rise in the United States, scientists have been searching for a safe drug that combats life-threatening obesity and a team of researcher at Indiana University may have discovered the much sought after “fat pill.”

A team of Indiana University researchers, created a synthetic hormone that was found to regulate glucose metabolism. The hormone has been shown promote to weight loss by suppressing appetite and increasing the rate that calories are burned off.

Lead researcher, Dr Richard DiMarchi administered the hormone to mice with remarkable results. After the mice were given the hormone for seven days, the mice lost nearly a quarter of their weight with an astounding 42 percent reduction in their stored fat.

After a month, the mice lost 28 percent of their weight with their stored fate mass reduced by 63 percent.

The results of the study show proof of principle “…that single molecules can be designed that are capable of simultaneously activating more than one mechanism to safely normalize body weight,” said DiMarchi.

Previous obesity pills offered limited results with serious side effects. This new hormone shows promise for weight control, which can help prevent the alarming increase in adult-onset diabetes.

Further studies are needed before clinical trials can be conducted on humans. The miracle “fat pill” may be still years away, but the researchers are confident they are on the right path.

The entire study is available in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.
