New Blood Thinners Found To Be Better Than Plavix

August 30, 2009

Spain (ChattahBox) – Two new drugs have been found to work better for thinning the blood than former medication popular within the medical world.

Brilinta and Effient have become new industry standards in battling blood clots, becoming the main contenders against the formerly used drug, Plavix. They are now competing in a $9 billion annual industry that was once dominated by Plavix.

Brilinta is an especially exciting drug, which has shown a 2% decrease in patient deaths since it’s use began.

“I think this will become the new standard of care,” Dr. Douglas Weaver of the American College of Cardiology, was quoted by The LA Times.

“It’s more rapid, more effective and appears to be safer.”

It also has the advantage of disappearing several days before any other blood thinners, which can last a week or more in a patient’s system. This leads to decreased side effects.

The only down side that has been named in comparison to Plavix is that it has to be taken more frequently, at twice a day, instead of once. But many are saying that the reported benefits far outweigh this small flaw.
