Scientists Create Jaw Bone Using Stem Cells

October 11, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Researchers have made a huge breakthrough in the use of adult stem cells after successfully creating several parts of a jaw bone.

“The availability of personalized bone grafts, engineered from the patient’s own stem cells, would revolutionize the way we currently treat these defects,” Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, lead researcher on the project, was quoted by PressTV.

It is yet another step in the use of adult stem cells in place of fetal stem cells, which has taken the main focus of research in recent years.

Scientists hope that this new technology will allow them to do more than just repair damage done to the region, but would allow for the treatment of several conditions, and someday be applied to other bone graphs.

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The success in the use of adult stem cells in activities such as this is very encouraging since there are no real limits on the numbers of these cells available for use in repairing damage and correcting conditions.
