Womb Transplants Just Around The Corner, Scientists Say

October 25, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – In an astonishing announcement by the medical community, scientists have announced that they are as close as two years away from being able to give full womb transplants.

Studies have allowed them to move the womb with adequate blood flow, showing that they should be able to transplant the womb itself while maintaining a pregnancy.

The current attempts have allowed them to move the womb along will all arteries and veins intact in adult female rabbits, a huge feat that gives hope to women who have suffered damage to the uterus due to disease.

“There are certain technical issues to be ironed out but the crux of how to carry out a successful graft that’s properly vascularised – I think we’ve cracked that one,” Richard Smith, the research lead, commented.

“There’s a lot of dismissal in the profession in terms of this being a step too far in fertility management. But for a woman who is desperate for a baby, this is incredibly important.”
