Suicide Clinics In Switzerland May Be Subject To New Laws

October 29, 2009

Switzerland (ChattahBox) – The Swiss government has drafted two new bills that would heavily regulate assisted suicides, forcing clinics like Dignitas to step up their authorization process.

Dignitas and Exit are the two clinics in Switzerland that help terminally ill patients end their lives.

But a broadening of the rules has led legislatures to begin the process of changing the laws to force the clinics to adhere to stricter processes.

“It won’t be possible in future for someone to cross the border and commit suicide a few days later with the help of an organization,” Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said.

She has accused Dignitas specifically of not following by common sense rules, such as requiring a second opinion about the terminal nature of the case, and excluding those that were severely depressed, or not of sound mind.

The new bill proposes a waiting period to be determined on each case, a second medical opinion, and the patient to have less than a few months to live.

But Dignitas director Ludwig Minelli says these regulations would be a mistake.

“By cutting off assisted suicide for chronically or psychologically ill people who are capable of informed choice the Government will promote lonely suicides on train tracks.”

The new bills are set to be voted on in May.

    Government is doing great.
You have a choice. Live or die. Every breath is a choice. Every minute is a choice. To be or not to be.
