Good News Guys! Beer is Good for Your Heart

November 19, 2009

(ChattahBox)— According to a Spanish study, daily moderate consumption of alcohol reduces the risk of coronary heart disease in men, by at least 35 percent and downing from three to 11 shots of liquor per day reduced the risk even further, by a whopping 50 percent. Of course excessive drinking can cause other problems, such as liver disease, dementia and stroke, but coronary heart disease would not be a concern.

The study looked at the drinking habits of 15,500 men and 26,000 women, between the ages of 29 and 69 and they were followed during the decade-long study. The Basque Public Health Department divided the study participants into six categories beginning with people who didn’t drink at all to those who consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.

The results showed that men, but not women, benefited from significant reductions in coronary heart disease. All types of alcohol provided the same benefit, but the heart benefits increased with higher consumption.

The researchers theorize that alcohol increases good cholesterol levels, which prevents fatty bad cholesterol from clogging arteries.

Other researchers cautioned not to use the results of this study as an excuse to take up binge drinking, which can cause serious health problems, including stroke.

The big takeaway from this study is to consume alcohol in moderation, which is about one glass of wine per day for women and two for men.
