These silica deposits were created by hot springs.

The robot Spirit reported this discovery about a year ago, and the depoits were studied by a team of scientists led by Steven Squyres of Cornell University, and Jack Farmer of the ASU School of Earth and Space Exploration.

Through these findings, they have confirmed that Mars had a habitable environment with enough liquid and energy present to sustain life.

They have found that these silica deposits can contain fossil remains, which could lead to them containing evidence of life on Mars.

The history of life on Mars could be preserved within these silica deposits..

The study has been published in the May 23, 2008 issue of the journal Science.
