It was only a few days ago when the Phoenix Mars Lander sent back pictures from the red planet after digging through the soil.

What the pictures revealed were white clumps, which the team believed could have been either ice or salt.

They sent the Phoenix Mars Lander back to that point to take pictures again, when they realized that the white chunks were gone.

The New York Times has reported that following this,

What they found was that the white chunks had disappeared Dr. Peter H. Smith of the University of Arizona stated, “It must be ice. The whole science team thinks that. I think we feel this is definite proof that these are little chunks of ice material.”

NASA is hopeful that the mission with the Phoenix can prove without a shadow of a doubt that Mars can or cannot support life.
