Originally, then plan was for the space shuttle Atlantis to launch next month for a repair and upgrade mission on the Hubble space telescope.

Over the weekend though, the Hubble space telescope began to malfunction.

This glitch has made it unable to store or transmit any data back to Earth, posing a major issue.

NASA hopes to have this fixed in the coming weeks, but this will delay the entire misison until next year.

The plan now is to hold the mission launch in the middle of February, 2009.
