300 Million Year Old Fossilized Brain Found In Fish

March 3, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Researchers have found a 300 million year old fossilized brain inside of an ancient fish.

The fish in question used to reside in Kansas and Oklahoma, and the discovery has researchers excited.

“Fossilized brains are unusual, and this is by far the oldest known example,” John Maisey of the American Museum of Natural History, explained.

“Soft tissue has fossilized in the past, but it is usually muscle and organs like kidneys.”

The discovery of the Iniopterygians brain is leading to further study plans, where scientists will begin looking for other fossilized brains that could be hidden within the ancient remains of other sea creatures.

“Now that we know that brains might be preserved in such ancient fossils, we can start looking for others,” says Maisey.
