Outrage expressed at death of rare shark

April 7, 2009

(Chattahbox) — One of the most elusive and scientifically important animals left on Earth was captured today in the Philippines, and was promptly killed, sautéed and eaten before any record was made,  according to reports from Australian news.

The 4m [13.2ft]-long, half-tonne Megamouth Shark, an example of which is so rarely seen, each sighting is given a number, was caught by fishermen looking for mackerel in the waters off the small coastal town of Donsol. Elson Aca, the local representative for the World Wildlife Fund, said the animal, only the 41st Megamouth ever sighted in history, was promptly butchered and cooked in coconut milk, against the Organization’s advice.

Gaining its name from its fearsome, meter-wide mouth, the species only came to the attention of science in 1976, when the first one was caught off Oahu, Hawaii; The discovery was universally celebrated as the most significant marine find of the 20th century, but despite the passage of time, very little is known of the beast as so few are seen, and no others have ever been captured.

The islands of the Philippines are positioned at the very zenith of a so-called ‘Coral Triangle,’ regarded by numerous experts as the deserving focus for academic studies in bio-diversity. Donsol itself has even earned a, now somewhat ironic reputation for marine conservation after locals agreed to stop killing the rare, Giant Whale sharks that gather to feed in the area’s crystal-clear waters.

Since this agreement, the Donsol community has promoted itself as the Whale Shark capital of the world and now enjoys a considerable revenue from the tourism such posturing has since created.
