Study Shows Volcanic Eruption Caused 10-Year Winter

July 8, 2009

New Jersey (ChattahBox) – A new study out of Rutgers has found that the Indonesian Toba volcanic eruption that occurred over 74,000 years ago caused a ten-year long winter, rather than the previously believed ice sheet, a UPI report announced.

The study, which was done by University professors Samuel Levis, Luke Oman, Georgiy Stenchikov, Caspar Ammann, Alan Robock, and Drew Shindell, found in environmental simulations that the volcanic blast would have created a very harsh decade long winter.

That winter would have been extreme enough to wipe out a large portion of the Earth’s human population.

The results have been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres.
