Hungry Military Robot Gobbles Up Organic Waste, But Not Dead Bodies

July 16, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The mad scientists at the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA, have commissioned a science fiction inspired robot that gobbles up every bit of organic biomass in its path and converts the energy into fuel for extended military reconnaissance missions.

The prototype Robot is powered by a unique waste heat engine developed by Cyclone Power Technologies, which fuels itself by harvesting biomass from the surrounding environment, including dead trees, plants, wood chips, animal waste and even dead bodies.

The robot is manufactured by Robotic Technology Inc. and is appropriately named, Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot or EATR. The robot was developed to perform long-range, long-endurance missions without the need for re-fueling.

EATR is designed to keep going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny. The robot obtains its energy by foraging on biologically inspired and organism-like materials, converting the food into energy, the same way that humans eat and derive life-sustaining energy from organic-based food.

Besides powering up on biomass, EATR can also run on conventional and alternative fuels, such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil and solar energy.

The EATR system is equipped with a highly sensitive robotic arm with end effectors and an autonomous intelligent control system with sensors, which can be mounted on a military High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle.

EATR is currently being put through its paces to ensure it can distinguish between organic biomass sources of energy and non-energy materials, such as glass or metal.

The idea of a giant military robot gobbling up dead corpses on a battlefield is certainly macabre.

Update/Correction: Contrary to early reports, the EATR will not eat animal or human remains.

No dead bodies as fuel for the robot – it’s a vegetarian. FoxNews.com has a corrected story http://bit.ly/D2P6u.
