July 16, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The large and congested metropolitan area of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas is also home to one of the most important sites for dinosaur fossils in the country. Paleontologists have descended to the fossil site and recently made a major discovery of a nearly 100 million year old crocodile skull with two and a half inch long teeth.

The Arlington Archosaur Site, located in North Arlington, Texas is situated in an area of Cretaceous rocks that once served as a gateway to a giant prehistoric sea about 95 million years ago.

The crocodile skull was unearthed with nearly 50 intact bones, with the menacing teeth clearly visible.

The site has rewarded paleontologists with scores of dinosaur fossils, including turtles, lungfish, fish and sharks. Recently a skeleton of an enormous herbivorous “duck billed” dinosaur was discovered on the northern hillside of the the site.

The excavation of the Arlington Archosaur Site began just a year ago. Researchers from the University of Texas in Arlington plan to continue with the excavation of the important site and expect to discover additional fossils.
