Researchers Pinpoint The Reason Why Weed Causes Memory Loss

August 3, 2009

France (ChattahBox) – Researchers at the Pompeu Fabra University have said that they have pinpointed the exact way that marijuana causes short term memory loss, which could help pave the way for new drugs to replace medicinal marijuana.

Rafael Maldonado and Andres Ozaita have published a paper in Nature Neuroscience, which says that the biochemical pathways that cause memory loss when smoking cannabis have been identified.

Two groups of mice were created using genetic modification, one group missing the CB1 receptors that react to cannabis exposure.

The group that had the receptors acted in the same forgetful way that most who have used marijuana will experience during their high. The mice missing the receptors were unaffected within their memory regions.

“Not only were the behavioral effects abolished, the biochemical responses that are directly responsible for the amnesic-like effect were abolished too,” Maldonado was quoted by RAW.

The researchers hope that the study will allow scientists to come up with a drug that offers the significant pain relief of marijuana, without the hindering mental effects.

Legalize it. I have been using it off and on for 30 years and I am fine. Yes, while you are very stoned you have short term memory loss. That also happens with alcohol too, the difference is the heavy alcohol user will at times turn to violence and be a danger to himself and society, and the effects of alcohol are long term while the cannabis symptoms dissipate after cessation of usage.

What they need to find in these studies is the effect of the long term memory. Any sort of foreign “substance” introduced into the body is going to affect the brain. It is such a delicate part of the body. On that note, I think medical marijuana is beneficial in that; the brain is less receptive to the body when it is introduced, thus minimizing pain. Does it actually help the patient or help their brain long term? probably not. That is why they continually make certain patients take brain challenges and continuously stimulate their minds… The pot, surprisingly doesn’t do that.

I think it would be a really long time before they can make use of Marijuana as a drug. There are too many activists against this sort of stuff without them realizing the value of things.

it regenerates the braincells WHY do we not have it because government say so… we create miney and die for it =./ cannabis should be growing on every street corner.. kids with add addhd odd it is healthy for them rather then ritalin wich effects the brain longterm.
