New ‘Live Extraction’ Technology Milks Oil From Algae

August 28, 2009

(ChattahBox)—A groundbreaking new technology that extracts oil from algae may one day solve the world’s reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels. The technology uses a cost effective and environmentally friendly method to milk natural oil from algae.

The unique and high speed manufacturing process is called, Live Extraction or milking and was developed by OriginOil.

The process creates a continuous production of algae oil without destroying the algae cell, and is efficient because a single algae cell can now produce more oil during its lifetime using lower amounts of energy.

Unlike other processes to extract oil from algae, OriginOil’s method doesn’t rely upon expensive consumables, such as reverse osmosis membranes, and it’s not limited to specific oil-bearing algae strains, such as Botryococcus braunii and Algae Live Extraction.

Riggs Eckelberry, CEO of OriginOil describes the process, as “stimulating the algae cells through specific electrical modulations.” “The challenge is how to keep the cells alive while continuously extracting the oil, and we have achieved this,” said Eckelberry.

OriginOil applied for a patent for its new technology and plans to take the process outside of a lab, using a 200-gallon tank.
