Researchers Find More Than A Dozen New Species In Volcano Crater

September 7, 2009

Papua New Guinea (ChattahBox) – An exciting and incredible find has allowed researchers to find a number of new species that were living in a jungle habitat formed in a crater of Papua New Guinea’s Mount Bosavi.

American, British, and Papua New Guinea scientists set out to explore the untouched habitat, and were shocked by what they found.

In just five short weeks they have discovered 16 new species of frog, 3 new types of fish, a giant rat that may be the largest in the world, and a new species of bat. Among the more interesting of the finds were frogs that possessed long, deadly fangs to attack their prey.

“It was mind-blowing to be there and it is clearly time we pulled our finger out and decided these habitats are worth us saving,” said Dr George McGavin, the expedition leader, was quoted by The Guardian.

They also found giant lizards, and kangaroos that live in trees, while the world is dominated by species that are more commonly seen as prey. There were no jungle cats or monkeys to head the food chain.

Such a significant find is hoped to push governments into putting more effort into saving ecosystems, such as the Rain Forest, which is diminishing at an alarming rate.
