Large Hadron Collider Sets New World Record at 1.18 Trillion Electron Volts

November 30, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) continues to impress scientists around the world with its atom smashing capabilities. On Sunday, the LHC fresh from its recent restart on November 20, set a new world record for energy.

The LHC propelled the energy of its particle beams past one trillion electron volts, making the giant atom smasher the world’s highest energy particle accelerator. The LHC engineers increased the energy of the “pilot beam,” reaching 1.18 trillion electron volts at 2344 GMT.

The LHC bested the previous record set by the Tevatron particle accelerator in Chicago, of 0.98 trillion electron volts. The LHC is expected to someday reach, seven trillion electron volts.

The LHC is stored in a circular tunnel on the French-Swiss border and is run, by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research French or Cern. The CERN scientists have great plans for future breakthroughs. The CERN researchers plan to conduct a series of major physics experiments using the LHC, starting in 2010.

Cern’s director general Rolf Heuer is excited about the LHC’s performance so far. “We are still coming to terms with just how smoothly the LHC commissioning is going,” said Heuer. The CERN directed added, “It is fantastic. However, we are continuing to take it step-by-step, and there is still a lot to do before we start physics in 2010. I’m keeping my champagne on ice until then.”

CERN researchers hope to witness the creation of new physics, as a result of the powerful collisions, which could someday unlock the secrets of the Universe.
