British woman sets new freediving world-record

April 3, 2009

(Chattahbox) — Sara Campbell, a tiny woman from England, has just secured her place at the top, by going straight to the bottom.

The modest, 4ft 11-inch Yoga instructor from London reclaimed her Freediving title from 2007 in an underwater cave in the Bahamas on Thursday, with a breathtaking dive of 95.7-meters [314-feet.] And it was done without the aid of a tank.

Known to her friends and growing legion of fans as “Mighty Mouse,” Sara, 37, has now officially gone deeper than any female diver in the sport’s entire history. She slipped silently beneath the turquoise waters of Dean’s Blue Hole, in the Bahamas’ Long Island, wearing only a wet-suit and a large, custom fin, and was submerged without air for 3 minutes and 36 seconds. “The dive felt great and I’m feeling fantastic,” she told the Times of London. “At one point I started thinking, ‘Do I really want to do this?’ – but then I told myself not to be ridiculous, just go for the bottom.”

Sara earned her reputation as “part woman, part fish,” when she won the contest two years ago, breaking three world records in 48-hours in her diving debut. But she was absent from last year’s contest due to the death of her Mother. British Doctors have since studied the diminutive diver and found her lungs are twenty-five percent larger than than a typical person of her age and size, thus allowing her to store more air before she departs for the depths.

Not content with her newest world record, Ms. Campbell is now developing plans to become the first woman to achieve a new record of 100-meters [328 feet], and is endearingly sure of success; “I know I can do it, it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’.”

And if you’re expecting to hear that she failed, our advice would be, ‘don’t hold your breath.’
