Mark Fidrych Died Tragically – Ruled as Accident

April 17, 2009

(ChattahBox) — As anticipated the death of former Detroit Tiger pitcher Mark Fidrych Monday was ruled an accident. The 54-year-old hurler was found dead underneath his 10-wheel dump truck at his farm in nearby Northborough but no other details were revealed at the time.  And the details proved to be quite horrific.

According to the Worcester, Massachusetts medical examiner’s office, which released its findings Thursday, Fidrych died by suffocation when his clothes became entanged up with the truck’s power takeoff shaft.

Authorities from the District Attorney’s office said the case is now closed.

Fidrych played for the Tigers, where he finished with a 19-9 mark while posting a 2.34 ERA his rookie season, in which he won the 1976 AL Rookie of the Year. He perhaps burnt out his arm though and battled injuries the rest of his short career.

The Bird was EveryMan…who amoung us hasn’t crawled into a project only to get tangled so deep that we ended up feeling suffocated? He’ll be missed.
