Manny Ramirez to be suspended 50 games for positive test

May 7, 2009

ChattahBox -— Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, joined a growing lineup of baseball All-Stars of the the Steroids Era linked to drugs. The dreadlocked slugger was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball after failing a drug test in spring training.

Ramirez said he did not take steroids and was given medication by a doctor that contained a banned substance. Sources however say he tested positive for the drug HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is used by steroid users at the end of a cycle (usually 8-12 weeks) to get their bodies to produce testosterone again and keep their testicles from shrinking. It isn’t known whether Ramirez was on the list of 104 players that failed a drug test in 2003 but one wonders why one of baseball’s premier power hitters got such a short contract this offseason: two years, with an option to leave after one.

I was floored by how many millions of dollars Manny stands to lose by not playing 50 games
