Mavericks’ All-Star Dirk Nowitzki: Leaves Pregnant Ex-Fiance in Jail

May 27, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The 31-year-old Dallas Mavericks’ power forward, Dirk Nowitzki is being criticized by his fans and the press for his contemptible handling of a sticky domestic situation, involving a pregnant ex-fiancé he has left to sit in a Texas jail cell.

Christa Ann Taylor, 37-years old, is a woman with a checkered criminal past, but she lived together with Nowitzki for nearly two years and they were engaged to be married, with a July wedding planned. Nowitzki who earns $18 million every year, hightailed it back to his native Germany on Thursday leaving behind many unanswered questions and speculation.

Taylor was taken into custody and thrown into jail on May 6, when police showed up at Nowitzki’s Preston Hollow home, arresting her for on an outstanding parole violation, stemming from a 1999 Missouri conviction for passing bad checks and an outstanding warrant for an indictment for a theft of services charge, where she used a bad credit card for dental work she received in 2004, ranging from $1,500 to $20,000.

Law enforcement officials from Missouri say she also has several aliases with a long criminal record of petty financial crimes. She is being held on $50,000 bond for the theft of service charge and without bond on the probation violation.

She was given a pregnancy test in jail that came back positive. She claims the baby is Nowitzki’s. The all-star forwards’ lawyer Robert Hart at first, publicly questioned Taylor’s credibility and her pregnancy. Now the lawyer’s statements are taking the stance that if the baby is indeed Nowitzki’s, he will do the right thing.

Apparently, Nowitzki’s German coach didn’t like Taylor. Before entering into a prenuptial agreement, a private investigator was hired to look into Taylor’s past. Soon thereafter, the police showed up at her door while Nowitzki was playing with his team in another city.

Taylor has told the Dallas Morning News she is broke and alone and is hoping for a quick paternity test so she can prove the baby belongs to Nowitzki.

Nowitzki is an 11-year NBA veteran, popular Mavericks’ All-Star and past winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player award. He averaged nearly 35 points in the exciting playoff series just played against Denver.

Meanwhile, Nowitzki’s fans are waiting for Nowitzki to step up and help his pregnant ex-fiancé get out of jail.

This post is idiotic for two reasons:

    1. Dirk cannot get Ms. Taylor out of jail. She is held on two different charges. Her probation violation means she is held WITHOUT BAIL. What do you want him to do?

    2. There is virtually no criticism of Dirk for his handling of the situation. Mostly sympathy for him.

He can’t bail her out of jail-one of the charges has no bond set-think it has to do with her possible extradition to St. Louis. So even if he wanted to bail her out, I don’t think he can.
She is in jail because of crimes she committed; she is broke and alone due to her own actions. Not sure why he should pay for crimes she committed before they met. This woman is a con artist who is apparently good at drumming up sympathy. I can see why Dirk is keeping his distance now.
There were reasons the pregnancy story was questioned; her past actions and numerous aliases make her character questionable at best.
The only article I’ve seen criticizing Dirk would be a poorly researched blog entry at the Huffington Post. I think most people realize Dirk got duped.
Dirk needs to establish paternity and sue for custody of the baby.

Okay I am confused her. What do you mean fans are waiting for him to get her out of jail. I am not.. Why would he do that because she is pregnant. So what. Would it have made one bit of a difference if this woman was pregnant and the person who that was the father was not an NBA star? Yes that would make a big difference. That is crazy. Instead of posting stories about how there are men everyday out there who are in fact deadbeat dads and do not pay child support should be made to pay leaving it up to the state to take care of there children. Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this. He will do what he has to do but you cannot make this man be with her if he does not want to. You have to remember this woman broke the law and several laws at that and you guys are making her out to be Mother Theresa. He is the victim here not her. She lied to him and did not tell him the truth. He was going to marry him. And let me tell you another thing this supposed accidental phone call on how they first met. That was not an accident. This woman knew who she was calling. That was set up. This woman is an opportunist and gold digger. She says her only source of income is Dirk. The lady is nearly 40 years old. She can’t get her lazy butt up and work and she is lonely and alone and broke. Well welcome to reality because most of us live there. I do not see anyone makng a big deal about other people in jail that are alone and broke. She did this to herself and like they say what you reap you must sow. Why did she lie to Dirk. She should have came clean to begin with but she knew Dirk would leave her when he found out about her that is why she said nothing and how could she not know about her warrants. If she used an alias name and a unauthorized credit card I would think she would know. She is acting like the victim and she is not. You guys just need to leave this man alone. Noone ever made this big of a deal with things worse like R Kelly who had sex with an underage girl that was only like 13 or 14 but of course he got off with money and a good lawyer. She thinks by being pregnant and establishing paternity that he is the father that he is going to be with her but hello wake up and smell the coffee he must have wanted her out for sometime if when they arrested her they also served her with an eviction. Those usely are not all of a sudden. I am sure she knew it was coming. Leave him alone. When the time is right he will make a statement. His attorney said if that is his baby he will do the right thing. He needs to just establlish paternity and get full custody of that child and find him a real woman that is real and true to him so they can help him raise that child so that gold digger does not get a dime. The media just needs to leave him alone. I do not know what he was thinking when he got with her. I am not trying to be mean but she looks like a man and she also looks like she came on that movie planet of the apes. Dirk what were you thinking. You must have come to your sensus.

Thank you for all the informative comments. I do realize Christa Ann Taylor, is being held on a parole violation without a bond, which is why I wrote: “help his pregnant ex-fiancé get out of jail.”

There are many things a man with Nowitzki’s financial means can do to help her. For one, he could pay off the bond on the other charge and obtain a decent lawyer for her. He made sure he obtained a good lawyer for himself to make public statements on his behalf smearing Taylor.

Whatever the situation with Taylor’s criminal history, aliases and so on, Nowitzki lived with her for nearly two years and planned to marry her. She admitted she wasn’t forthcoming about all of the details of her past crimes, but she did inform him she had some sort of criminal past.

I sympathize with Nowitzki’s situation, and I am not suggesting he should be forced to resume his relationship with Taylor, what I am suggesting is that he “Man-Up” and deal with the situation. He could have quietly taken care of the situation, instead of letting his attorney loose on the media, making things worse.

If the child is his, then he needs to make sure Taylor is provided for, released from jail and receives good health care. If he decides to sue for custody of the child, that’s his right to do so.

But meanwhile, he just needs to suck it up and deal with the mess, before it overtakes his career.

And Mav’s Fan, statements like yours: “…she also looks like she came on that movie planet of the apes,” demonizing Taylor with racist smears doesn’t help Nowitzki’s case or yours.

Taylor smeared her own reputation with her criminal actions. There is no reason for Dirk to pay for a lawyer for her. Dirk’s lawyer didn’t smear her,either-he questioned the pregnancy claim. I would say there was good reason to question that claim. He also stated that Dirk will provide for that child. That has been the extent of the lawyer’s talk. Not really going loose on the media, imo.
She has a reputation as a gold digger. Whatever she told him about her past, she most likely soft pedaled it and probably made it sound like she had paid her debt to society.
Jail will provide for her just fine; she got herself into this legal mess-she can get herself out. She is broke and alone due to her own dishonest actions.
This isn’t going to overtake his career, either. From all I’ve read, a majority of the people sympathize with Dirk, not his poor choice of a partner. This article is basically a repeat of Jason Williams’ ridiculous one.

It is journalist like you that are smearing Dirk’s reputation. His fans are behind him. And if you were any kind of GOOD journalist, you would know that with Dirk being the private person he is, he might be trying to do the best thing at this time for her, until he finds out if the baby is actually his or not. When he went home to Germany, there was only speculation, no solid evidence that she was even pregnant. According to her, she didn’t know that she was pregnant until they took a pregnancy test in the Dallas County Jail, but her friend was yelling it out to anyone that would listen to her when the arrest was first made. Yes, I can understand him having her checked out with a private investigator if he was about to marry her. I’m sure that you would too. Here you are smearing him for no reason. He is a high profile person, making lots of money for what he does, it would be natural for him to protect himself and his assetts. If he didn’t, he would be the dumb one. He trusted her, and yes, he may have even loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but he needs to handle things the way he feels is best for him, his family, his team and now possibly his child. And no matter what any of us think or say, it is ultimately his decision, and being a true Maverick or Dirk fan, I will still stand behind him and know that he will take care of that baby, if it is his. Go and do some good journalism and quit hacking on this like a furball; cough it up and move on.

To all the fans that think he has no responsibility here:

His feelings on her are not an issue. The fact is, that is probably his child, and until another man steps up to claim otherwise, he needs to do his best in whatever capacity he can. She needs proper medical treatment and prenatal care for the sake of their baby.

If he is doing something about that, fantastic. But please stop with all the ridiculous comments against the write of this story. I swear you all act as though you are close personal friends of the guy. You don’t know all the facts, any more then we do!

Sure attack the writer you lame-oid Maverick fans. I realize losing year after year has to be hard and watching the owner blame everyone else for his bad basketball team seems like a good example to copy. But lets get real here. This is another spoiled multimillion dollar star shirking his responsibility. Nowitzki needs to step up (in life and on the court) and not just protect his butt with high price lawyers. You don’t live with a woman for that long and then abandon her because it may look bad for you.

This story just keeps getting better and better. I think there are some fundamental questions we need to ask ourselves about this relationship. I bring up some of these questions at my blog at . Take a look and let me know what you think.

Did HE break all the laws SHE did? I think SHE needs to be responsible for HER actions. HE shouldn’t bail her out of anything, in my opinion.

  14. Nicki on June 20th, 2009 12:00 am

Actually, it makes perfect sense to leave her in jail. He is suing for sole custody of the child. He will get it, as she has already proved three times that she is an unfit mother. She has also proved that she has no problem skipping out on her responsibilities and just changing her name so she can’t be found. So until that baby is born, jail is the safest place for her to be, in the case of that baby. This is not a woman that can be trusted with anything. So at least if she is in jail, he knows where his child is. This is also not the first time this parasidic person has latched onto an athelete. And now there are reports that she has been stealing money from Dirk also. Also, I have met Dirk, I have worked with Dirk and other players for charity events. He is a good man. No, he is a GREAT man. Had she been honest with him from the beginning (when they first started dating), he would have helped her out. But she lied over and over. She also created a lot of friction for him, between the team, his coaches, and his family. If I was in his position, I would leave her there, and trust me when I say, the majority of the his fans feel the same way. That is, in fact, the general concensus here in Texas.
