Fran Tarkenton Blasts Favre: “Despicable,” “Bombs” With the Jets

(ChattahBox)—“Scramblin’ Fran,” former NFL quarterback and Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton, appeared on an Atlanta sports talk radio show, “790 The Zone,” where he went on a long rant against former Packers’ quarterback, Brett Favre.

Tarkenton called Favre’s behavior towards his old team, the Green Bay Packers, “despicable” and he didn’t stop there, he was just warming up for the next onslaught.

Tarkenton was critical of Favre’s decision to come out of an announced retirement after playing nearly 20 years with the Packers, and expecting to resume his role of head quarterback with his old team. “…We have glorified the Brett Favre’s of the world,” said Tarkenton, noting that it’s about the team not all about Brett Favre.

Tarkenton believes Favre should be “grateful” to the Packers and accuses Favre of treating the Packers organization “horribly.” “…Now he wants to get revenge…” against the Packers, said Tarkenton

It seems Tarkenton has a little Alzheimer’s’ type amnesia. He was traded by the Vikings to the New York Giants after the 1966 season and publicly expressed his disappointment with the move.

When Favre, instead went to play with the Jets last season, Tarkenton said Favre “…goes to New York and bombs…” Ouch! Favre retired once again at the end of last season.

Now Brett Favre, at 39-years-old is considering one more comeback as the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. Tarkenton, taking a page out of Rush Limbaugh’s playbook wasn’t supportive of Favre’s plans to play for his former team. “…I kind of hope it happens, so he can fail,” said Tarkenton.

Tarkenton was also critical of Favre dressing before games in a separate locker room, while with the Jets. He also thinks that Favre has no business playing quarterback for the Vikings, if he missed all the off-season preparation and didn’t have a chance to bond with his teammates.

“I think he has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen,” Tarkenton said. Ouch again!

To put Tarkenton’s comments in perspective, Fran Tarkenton went to three Super Bowls while with the Vikings and couldn’t come away with a single win. Favre went to two Super Bowls and came away with one Super Bowl ring.
