Phoenix Suns’ Steve Nash Wanted Shaquille O’Neal Traded

June 26, 2009

(ChattahBox)— After failing to make the playoffs, it was time for the Phoenix Suns to regroup, and a large part of that process seemed to be the trading of aging star, Shaquille O’Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers during the last year of a hefty $20 million contract.

However, NBA sources now suggest that point guard Steve Nash may have been the motivating factor in getting rid of O’Neal.

According to an unnamed NBA source, point guard Steve Nash met with general manager Steve Kerr last week while in New York, to discuss his future with the team. Nash is due to become a free agent after this upcoming season, if the Suns and Nash can’t come to terms on a contract extension over the summer.

Nash is considered one of the top point guards in the game, and the Suns don’t want to lose him. Nash apparently is not happy with the caliber and slow pace of O’Neil’s play and expressed his feelings to the general manager.

Nash supposedly issued an ultimatum of sorts to Kerr, saying if O’Neil was still a part of the team next season, he may consider his options and go elsewhere.

Soon after that conversation, Shaquille O’Neal was traded to the Cavaliers.

Nash’s current contract is $7 million less than O’Neal’s. His new contract is expected to be higher.
