Former boxing champ Alexis Arguello found dead

July 1, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Former junior lightweight champion Alexis Arguello was found dead at his home early Wednesday under suspicious circumstances.

Nicaraguan presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguello’s death while the La Prensa newspaper stated Arguello was found with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The 57-year-old Arguello, who was elected mayor of his hometown Managua last year, retired in 1995 after several comebacks with a record of 82-8, which included 65 knockouts, and was inducted into boxing’s Hall of Fame.

Arguello’s death is still under investigation, but authorities are reportedly investigating it as a possible suicide.
