Wife charged with violent murder of ex-boxer Arturo Gatti in Brazil

July 13, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Brazilian police have formerly accused boxer Arturo Gatti’s wife with his murder. Police officials believe Amanda Rodrigues, 23 strangled the 37-year-old Italian born Canadian boxer with the strap of her purse while he was sleeping. Gatti was found dead with ligature marks on his neck while on his honeymoon with his wife and 10-month-old son on Saturday, police report. Gatti also had a head injury.  Rodrigues admits the couple were fighting the night before Gatti’s death but claimed that Gatti was drunk and someone else probably murdered him after he went alone to their apartment after they had a fight. Rodrigues quickly established herself as a prime suspect with major inconsistencies in her story and the alleged fact that the strap of her purse was blood stained.  Gatti, 37, nicknamed “The Thunder,” won acclaim as one of the most compelling television fighters of the modern era winning the IBF super featherweight champion in 1995 and WBC super lightweight champion in 2004. He retired in 2007.
