Tiger Woods taking heat for indelicate remark about Ernie Els

September 4, 2009

(ChattahBox) — One rarely here’s Tiger Woods speak out of turn but he made a statement this week that I think he might end up regretting. At a press conference in preparation for the Deutsche Bank Championship, Woods was asked about his recovery from knee surgery and here’s what he had to say:

“I feel pretty good with what I’ve done, and I think Ernie (Els) could have worked a little bit harder. Ernie is not a big worker physically, and that’s one of the things you have to do with an ACL repair. But Ernie travels all around the world, more than any other golfer. He plays all over the place, and it’s harder for him. He is starting to put it together a little bit. We all know he’s got the talent, we’ve seen it. It’s just a matter of him getting the confidence in what he’s doing.”

I have noticed this story is being reported with only the mention that ‘Ernie is not a big worker physically’ and not the part about the mitigating circumstances of his travel, to sensationalize the story, which is typical but not necessary. Els is a three-time major champion, who has definitely struggled to find the game after knee surgery in the summer of 2005,  and has won only three tournaments post injury, none since March 2008. Whereas Tiger who had near identical knee surgery in 2008, though thwarted in the major championships  has already come back to win five tournaments this year.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Tiger did rehab harder than most mortal men. But calling out the man (perhaps not with malice) nicknamed the Big Easy for his effortless style, as the ‘Big Lazy’ so to speak is just very poor form and how could he know for sure that it’s true?  It reminds of a time Tiger should clearly remember not so long ago when Retief Goosen insinuated that Woods was exaggerating the extent of his injury when winning the 2008 US Open.  After Woods disclosed the extent of his injury and his forthcoming surgery, Goosen quickly made a sincere apology.  Tiger might want to do the same?

Tigers comments are akin to kicking a man while hes down. I see no reason why years later Tiger needs to comment on Ernies work ethic, which he would have no direct knowledge of to begin with. This is along the lines of what Michael Jordan did in his Hall of Fame speech, learn to let things go boys.
