Notre Dame fires head football coach Charlie Weis

November 30, 2009

(ChattahBox) — After another tough year, going 6-6 this season, Notre Dame has fired football head coach Charlie Weis. Weis came to Notre Dame promising to restore the team to its former glory, but leaves as the first Irish coach to have three straight six-loss seasons.  Overall Weis was 35-27 in his five seasons.Weis leaves with a large consolation prize, with six years and a reported $18 million remaining on his contract. Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick decided to make the change following the Fighting Irish’s 45-38 loss to Stanford Saturday. “As an alumnus, Charlie understands those goals and expectations better than most, and he’s as disappointed as anyone that we have not achieved the desired results.”

Swarbrick announced that Rob Ianello, the team’s assistant head coach/offense, wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, will assume responsibility for football operations until a new coach is hired.  Speculation on realistic possible new head coach includes, Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.
