High-Speed Rail on its way, Says Obama

April 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)— After years of neglect by previous administrations, the US railroad system is about to get a huge overhaul. President Obama announced this week, of ambitious plans to build high-speed rail systems across America, changing how Americans travel. Obama says high-speed trains are cheaper and cleaner for the environment than highways or air travel and he wants to get started on the major transportation projects this summer.

Obama plans to use $8 billion of stimulus funds to begin the much needed infrastructure overhaul of ancient railway lines dotting the U.S. Some states, such as California and states in the Gulf Coast, are already in the process of developing a high-speed rail system. Those states will receive a portion of the stimulus funds to complete their rail projects.

Obama said this bold vision to overhaul our nation’s rail system is not a “pie in the sky” dream. Other countries have been developing high-speed rail systems, like Spain and China, while the U.S. is lagging behind.

Entrenched transportation interests in the U.S. previously lobbied for an expansion of highways and airline travel. We now have a landscape of trucks and cars, clogging the highways, emitting harmful greenhouse gases, polluting the environment.

President Obama cautioned it won’t be easy. IBM made a joint statement with Obama’s, discussing its expertise in producing high-speed rail systems in Europe and Asia and the obstacles ahead.

Obama pointed out two major obstacles to producing a major high-speed rail system. The first one is the current recession and bankrupt states not having the funds to contribute to a rail project. The second obstacle is a lack of trained workers and experts with the necessary skills to work on the rolling stock and track.

President Obama plans to overcome these obstacles with the help of track owners, and major corporations, like IBM to help propel the U.S. transportation industry into the 21st Century.

My money is on Obama.

We can do it. This is the nation who successfully put men on the Moon and returned them safely to Earth. We can build fast trains. What I am worried about is, can we bring the cost of rail travel down so it’s cheaper than flying First Class? Check it out; Amtrak from Dallas, TX to Portland, OR is $236 minimum, with a bus ride stuck in the middle. Add in the cost of food for 3 days, and it’s at least $386.
