Electric Hummers? Re-Tooled Giants Now Eco-Friendly

April 19, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Raser Technologies is not joking, when it says it plans to convert the gas-guzzling polluting Hummer into an environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient vehicle for the future. The General Motors’ Hummer has become the symbol for everything that’s wrong with the United States’ auto industry, overly dependant on gigantic fossil-fueled vehicles with little investment in new technology to produce affordable, high-performance electric models.

Raser Technologies is taking its eco-friendly philosophy one step further, by recycling the body of a Hummer, removing the gas guzzling engine and replacing it with lithium-ion battery packs.

The first prototype of the re-tooled Hummer will be presented next week at Detroit’s Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress. The once environmental offender, now defender of the environment, will feature hybrid drive train technology similar to the Chevrolet Volt. It’s technically a hybrid vehicle, retaining a small gas engine, but will drive on 100 percent electricity.

The new and improved Hummer engine will be fitted with a 100-kilowatt generator to recharge three, 40-kilowatt lithium-ion battery packs, which can be recharged in three hours. All the fun off-road functions of the Hummer will remain intact. It will run at 100 mpg at a range of 40 miles, with a top speed of 90 mph.

Raser VP, Jim Spellman, a former GM executive, says the company chose Hummers, because their large size can already accommodate the battery packs. Some minor modifications to the Hummer’s body were still needed, however. The transmission, drive shafts and exhaust were all moved or modified to some degree. The battery packs are mounted under the rear axle.

Despite concerns for the high price of gas, fuel-efficiency and concerns for the environment, many Americans still harbor a secret love affair for huge SUV muscle cars and trucks. Perhaps Raser Technology is on to something here; taking the now unsaleable SUVs that are clogging up dealer’s lots and transforming them into respectable vehicles for the 21st century.

Everything old tends to become new and fashionable again. Who would have thought it would happen to the much-maligned Hummer?

Raser Technology expects to produce 2,000, electric-hybrid re-tooled trucks and SUVs by next year.
