China Issues Order For Google Porn Block

June 19, 2009

China (ChattahBox) – The Chinese government has ordered Google to begin blocking ‘pornographic and vulgar’ images from it’s Chinese search results, and has issued a punishment to the company for what it says was reckless exposure of dangerous material to the country’s children.

China’s Internet Illegal Information Reporting Centre confronted Google after a news broadcast through the country’s official news station, which accused the search supergiant of allowing harmful content to be passed through foreign searches.

“We are undertaking a thorough review of our service and taking all necessary steps to fix any problems with our results. We believe we have addressed a large majority of the problem results,” Google said in an official statement on Reuters.

The move is the third in a string of controversial methods China is taking to secure the Internet. It follows on the heels of a software program that would block and monitor citizens online movements, which are set to be included in all computers sold after July, and a citizen volunteer program, where people would report ‘obscene or inappropriate’ content to the Internet Illegal Information Reporting Centre.

Many are worried, however, that this is just another step towards monitoring citizens who may visit sites critical of the Communist government, as well as a way to controlling information gathered by the Chinese population. This theory was further verified after the information blackout conducted during the Tiananmen Square anniversary, where websites were blocked, and foreign news casts edited that spoke of the event as a massacre.
