Commercial Satellite To Provide Internet Access From Space

July 1, 2009

South America (ChattahBox) – The first satellite dedicated purely to providing wireless and high speed Internet services from space has been launched from French Guiana.

The enormous satellite was created by TerreStar, and it is hoped to be the first step in competing with the WIFI and cable markets.

TerreStar has also developed their own smartphone, which will be places alongside such supergiants as the Apple iPhone.

“Off the network grid, you can make calls via the satellite. It’s a redundant path,” TerreStar President Jeff Epstein was quoted by WJS.com.

Other companies are now releasing their own plans to offer satellite Internet service, such as SkyTerra, who’s launch has been planned for 2010.
