New Eye Tracking Software Offers Gaming To The Disabled

July 1, 2009

Europe (ChattahBox) – New gaming software has been developed that uses eye-tracking to offer those with severe disabilities the ability to interact online.

Programs that have been posted on the Internet for free download have been funded by the EU through the COGAIN network. As they use advances eye movement software to interact in online gaming platforms, new worlds are being opened up to those who are unable to control a mouse.

“Until now, gaze-tracking technology has mainly been used for typing with visual keyboards, for browsing the web and other text-based applications. We have taken it to an entirely new level by using eye movements to control an avatar in a virtual environment, allowing people with disabilities to appear and interact just like able-bodied people if they wish,” Howell Istance was quoted by Science Daily.

In games such as the popular online MMORPG World of Warcraft the character is moved by looking left, right, and center, while certain commands are communicated through ‘eye-gestures; such as blinking.

The software can be downloaded at the official COGAIN website, here.
