Ford Announces Four-Cylinder EcoBoost Engine – Touts Fuel Efficiency In 2010 Lineup

July 22, 2009

(ChattahBox) — At it’s annual technology and new-model-year preview in Dearborn yesterday, Ford unveiled plans for higher fuel efficiency across its upcoming 2010 lineup. Ford revealed its upcoming 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine with EcoBoost: 230 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque minimum. It is the first EcoBoost engine to include Twin-Independent Variable Cam Timing and will deliver a 10-20 percent fuel-economy improvement versus larger-displacement V-6 engines without compromising performance,” according to Ford’s press release. Barb Samardzich, Ford’s vice president for global powertrain engineering, said the I-4 EcoBoost two-liter, four-cylinder engine will make a vehicle perform like one carrying a six-cylinder engine. Nearly every vehicle in its lineup will offer some form of the four-cylinder powerplant. Along with the new engine, Ford will also debut its Powershift six-speed dual clutch gearbox next year. The Powershift will yield a seven- to nine-percent efficiency improvement over current automatics.

Ford developed the EcoBoost engines as way to achieve 20 percent better fuel economy, and currently offers a six-cylinder version in some cars, such as the Ford Flex, which allows for eight-cylinder like performance with the better gas mileage. A vehicle with an EcoBoost engine costs a few thousand dollars more than the traditional engine vehicle, with prices varying based on the model. Ford claims the 2010 lineup is 20% more fuel-efficient than the 2009 lineup, without dropping any large vehicles.

I like the fact that Ford highlight not compromising performance in their increased effort to become more fuel efficient. It just shows that companies can still be the best without sabotaging the name and credibility they’ve been known for.
