Twitter DDoS Attack Targeted Political Blogger

August 7, 2009

Georgia (ChattahBox) – It has been reported that the Twitter DDoS attacks, which also targeted Facebook and Livejournal more here, was a politically motivated attack against Georgia-based blogger, Cyxymu.

Cyxymu is a well known, very outspoken supporter of Georgia, and has written many posts against Russia in recent months.

It is believed that Russian or Russian-sympathetic hackers targeted Cyxymu in order to silence his posts, though no group or individual has been officially blamed.

However, Cyxymu has stated at his Twitter account that he believes the attacks to have been committed by the former Russian secret police, the KGB.

Officials have not commented on this accusation, though an investigation into the attack, which caused considerable slow down on several sites, and a complete outage on Twitter.

The attack may have had the opposite effect than what the hackers had allegedly been hoping for. Cyxymu, who while well known is still a fairly obscure blogger, has now been shot into the media, a move that is sure to increase his blog hits.  Meanwhile Facebook and LiveJournal appear to be performing normally today. But Twitter has been down completely for the last few hours.
