New Weapon Could Put Laser Guns Into The Hands Of Police

October 1, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – A ‘laser gun’ that has been developed by the Pentagon may provide a new weapon for police in the future.

The weapon, a small gun that fires off a laser that causes a temporary burning sensation to the skin, has been in the planning stage of years. The point is to offer the ability to create pain without actual damage.

“We have established the minimum irradiance to cause a sensation and have characterised where thermal injury begins,” project engineer Wesley Burgei was quoted by New Scientist.

“But the exact operating irradiance which balances a useful military effect with a conservative margin of safety has not been nailed down yet.”

Researchers are currently trying to assemble the laser gun to have enough power to cause the burn, but not enough to damage the skin, or the eyes if fired too high.

If successful, it is hoped that they will be able to create small, hand held guns that will offer the police a new means of controlling the public, without the risk of death from real firearms or batons, but with more effectiveness than pepper spray and tasers.

A newer, less lethal weapon to help in ‘controlling the public.” Why doesn’t that make me feel better?

Gwen – I admit, it was rather sinister language, but it is accurate. LOL
