Google Bows To Newspaper Pressure And Caps Content

December 2, 2009

U.S. (ChattahBox) – After a number of fights over the past year with various newspaper organizations, Google has agreed to begin capping the amount of free news content that can be viewed through their search engine.

They have been accused of allowing users to take advantage of the ‘first click free’ program by Google to get into subscription sites, allowing Google to profit while the news agencies lose compensation.

Now, Google has said that they will cap the amount of content allowed to slip through. That means that from now on users will only be allowed to view up to five free stories through their Google News function.

However, they have brought up the fact that the news agencies, such as Murdoch owned News Corporation, may suffer popularity plunging, and Google rankings as a consequence.

“Paid content may not do as well as free options, but that is not a decision we make based on whether or not it’s free. It’s simply based on the popularity of the content with users and other sites that link to it.” Josh Cohen, Google’s product manager, said in a statement.

The reasons behind doing this are obvious, but how about the method? Unless it is IP based it seems as though it will be difficult to keep users from clearing their cash and cookies and just hopping on again for another round.

More details as they emerge.
