College Presidents Pushing For Lower Drinking Age, 18

September 8, 2008

Over 120 presidents from various colleges and universities have been pushing to lower the drinking age from 21 down to 18..Washington (ChattahBox) – Over 120 presidents from various colleges and universities have been pushing to lower the drinking age from 21 down to 18.

The Amethyst Initiative is the name of this new push, and has been approved so far by 128 presidents.

The hope for the presidents of colleges and universities is that by lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, they will be able to reduce binge drinking on campuses.

Beyond that, it is also expected that this could help promote more casual drinking.

This is not the thought by all though, as many groups believe that lowering the drinking age from 21 down to 18 is a very bad idea.

MADD, among other groups believe that if we do lower the drinking age from 21 to 18, a spike in drunken driving deaths will be seen.

College presidents though believe that drinking may increase, but the reduction of binge drinking could improve the health of college students, and keep them from loading up before getting behind the wheel.
